Bishopthorpe Bridge

Validus Construction was appointed to support extensive strengthening works at Bishopthorpe Bridge, York, in collaboration with WSP and City of York Council. The project centres on the installation of a corrugated steel underpass, full site clearance, structural brickwork, and enhancements to the existing bridge infrastructure, while maintaining public access and environmental considerations.

The scope of work required sensitive handling of existing structures and integration of new elements to improve both functionality and longevity, delivered in line with the specifications for highway works and CD 375 standards.

Key elements of the preparatory stage included:

  • Removal and delivery to Sustrans’ yard of existing:

    • Signs

    • Bin

    • Access gate

    • Existing brick wall

  • Making good landscaped areas including reinstatement of an ornamental tree and grass verge

  • Establishing a secure site compound and maintaining uninterrupted access to Brunswick Nursery

The site clearance phase was vital for ensuring safe access and proper foundation for the next stages of construction.

The new corrugated steel underpass forms the heart of the bridge’s improvement. Its design and manufacture were based on CD 375 and Appendix 25/1 guidelines. The underpass was anchored into place and framed with concrete block walls, using:

  • Foamed concrete backfill applied in controlled lifts

  • Non-shrink flowable grout to fully seal contact zones

  • Brick facing tied into existing abutments and blockwork for structural cohesion and heritage compatibility

To maintain safety, precise pressure-point crack repairs and repointing were completed along parapets, wingwalls, and decorative brick arches.

To increase the longevity and ecological responsibility of the works, several upgrades were implemented:

  • New brick facing across east and west elevations

  • 3-ring decorative brick facing arches for visual integration

  • Integrated wildlife features:

    • 2 swift bricks in west elevation

    • 2 bat tubes in east elevation

These integrations align with sustainable construction goals and support local biodiversity.

The Bishopthorpe Bridge Strengthening Project demonstrates Validus Construction’s capability in executing complex civil engineering works with minimal disruption and maximum care for environmental, structural, and aesthetic elements. The combination of engineering precision and ecological integration ensures the bridge will continue to serve both functional and community needs for decades to come.
